Ever since its inception, the Swiss Southern African Chamber of Commerce has put a special focus on the topic of education. It is the foundation on which individuals and societies can build on for their success. Promoting both practical training and tertiary schooling are core concerns of the SCSA and the first event of 2017 saw a prominent speaker address the members and guests that had made their way to the Zunfthaus Schmiden on a very chilly and blustery Monday afternoon in Zurich. In contrast to the grey winter day, the address of the guest speaker, the University of Cape Town's Vice-Chancellor Dr. Max Price, was hot and multicolored.
The topic of the address was "The current situation in the tertiary
education sector in South Africa", a theme that has been in the international spotlight over the
past two years in the wake of the at times violent and lawless "fees-must-fall" demonstrations
engulfing most universities in South Africa.
Dr. Price gave an expansive, firsthand account of the origins and development of the student
pro-tests, the underlying various currents and agendas by the stakeholders and the various
milestones in the chronology of the demonstrations. He gave insights into prevailing national
concerns, government proposals and local problems that compacted student dissatisfaction. And
analyzed the methods implemented by universities in dealing with the challenges
faced by the demands by students and focused in particular on the pragmatic approach adopted
by the University of Cape Town.
The presentation provoked many questions by the attentive audience
and the shared thoughts were highly valued. Our thanks goes to
Dr. Price for his time and the
frank and stimulating debate.
